Europaquartier: transport links completed

New harbour district

Interview on the construction project in the Konsul-Smidt-Straße/Überseetor area

Construction work at the Konsul-Smidt-Straße/Überseetor junction has been completed. This means that the Europaquartier (formerly Schuppen 3) has been connected to the Überseetor area in terms of transport since mid-May 2023. In this interview, Hanno Fritsch, Project Manager for Building Construction/Development at WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH, explains the key facts about this construction projecte.

Mr Fritsch, when did the construction work at the junction start?

Hanno Fritsch: Construction work on the 2nd construction phase for the conversion of the Konsul-Smidt-Straße/Überseetor junction started at the beginning of January 2023. This start of construction was scheduled to avoid a lengthy road closure over the turn of the year and thus reduce the disruption to traffic. In addition, the risk of longer downtimes due to heavy rainfall and frost should be minimised as far as possible. The road construction work was completed on schedule in May 2023.

What did the entire construction project look like?

The junction originally consisted of three road axes (T-junction), with Konsul-Smidt-Straße forming the east-west link. The connecting section to the north, the "Überseetor" road, was connected to the new "Hinter der Kranbahn" access road to the south and the junction was thus converted into a full junction. As a result, the junction became four-axle.

We worked in two construction phases: Firstly, in the first construction phase last year, the western cycle path and footpath, including the car park, were built to ensure that the new flats in the Europaquartier were ready for occupancy. Following the completion of the inner access road "Hinter der Kranbahn", we then began rebuilding the junction in order to prevent damage to the new traffic areas caused by the heavy goods traffic of the construction vehicles. The construction site deliveries for the Europaquartier were made via the Konsul-Smidt-Straße/Überseetor junction.

What was the reason for the expansion as a full junction?

The main reason for the expansion as a full junction was the new construction of the Europaquartier, which had to be efficiently connected to Konsul-Smidt-Straße. Accordingly, the access road "Hinter der Kranbahn" was built and connected to the junction of Konsul-Smidt-Straße. This enabled us to create a new traffic connection for the neighbourhood in the direction of the city centre.

What are the advantages of this construction project?

The biggest advantage is that the new Europaquartier can be best integrated into the overall infrastructure of the existing Überseetor area. The western connecting road, Jean-Monnet-Straße, is relatively narrow and small. It would otherwise be overloaded in future due to local traffic and there would be traffic jams in the new residential neighbourhood. This construction measure has optimised the flow of traffic in the new Europaquartier. The crossing of Konsul-Smidt-Straße for pedestrians and cyclists is now regulated by a new traffic light system and is therefore safer. In addition, this final extension has closed the gap in the southern side facilities (cycle path and footpath) on Konsul-Smidt-Straße. This means that the southern cycle and footpath between Überseepark and Hansator Strasse can be used continuously in future.
