New culinary mile in the former rice warehouse (Reislager)

After the Brüning Group in summer 2023, the first floor of the former rice hall on the Kellogg site is now coming to life. Högen Eck, Zio Manu di Napoli and Bremer Braumanufaktur are joining forces to create a new dining experience.

Anyone looking for a special culinary offering in Überseestadt will find it in the Reislager of the Flakes factory since February 2024. Three more tenants have moved in among the three office floors of the Brüning Group, which relocated from Fischerhude to Überseeinsel in summer 2023: the restaurant Zio Manu di Napoli and Bremer Braumanufaktur, both of which were located in the immediate vicinity, as well as the delicatessen Högen Eck, which previously served its customers from a food truck. All three have come together to create a new dining experience on a total area of around 1,800 square metres in the first completed building on Überseeinsel. Around 330 seats are available inside and around 450 outside during the outdoor season. Most of the seating areas are barrier-free.

Like open heart surgery

In order to create something completely unique at Reislager, Auf der Muggenburg 42, they deviated from the original construction plans, says Johannes Aderholz, Managing Director of Überseeinsel GmbH. While the initial concept envisaged a classic market hall with many small stalls and food trucks, a new variant was developed while the construction site was underway, which included canteen kitchens, a spacious fresh food area and the accommodation of a complete brewery. The supporting structure, building connections, water supply, electricity capacities, fire protection - everything had to be scrutinised again. "It was like open-heart surgery," says Aderholz. "But everyone did an excellent job and in the end everything was perfect."

Old elements integrated into new façade

Johannes Aderholz is pleased that the "footprint of the Reislager" has been preserved. Old bricks and façade elements have been integrated into the new building. "This gives the building its very own charm." Visitors coming through the main entrance enter Högen Eck, which includes a grocery shop for organic and regional products such as cheese, meat, baked goods and fish, as well as a canteen. At Högen Eck and Högens, Carina Schultze and Wilko Worthmann provide fresh ingredients and delicious lunch menus from Monday to Saturday. The offer is complemented by an extensive salad bar and snacks to take away.

Out of love for pizza dough

The restaurant Zio Manu di Napoli, whose name translates as "Uncle from Naples", moved to the Reislager at the end of January. There, owner Emanuele Piacevole will spoil his guests with his original Neapolitan pizzas as well as new creations. The centrepiece of the restaurant is the glass kitchen, where the pizza dough is prepared with a lot of time and love so that the base is light and fluffy.

Follow the brewing process live

Behind a glass wall that can be opened for events is the new brewery, where the popular Hopfenfänger craft beers are brewed in front of guests - partly with hops from Gemüsewerft. The MakeItBright team has artistically captured the brewing process on the walls. "We were and remain an experience brewery and still offer guided tours, visits, tastings and brewing seminars. We also organise catering and events inside and outside the Reishalle," says Hannah Kühnhold from Bremer Braumanufaktur.

The Hopfenfänger beer flows into the glasses in the brewery. You can make yourself comfortable here in rustic separees or let your gaze wander over the Weser from the gallery. Incidentally, the menu doesn't just feature "liquid gold" - the pub also serves delicious food. The variety of dishes ranges from home-pickled salmon in black beer pickle to classic Munich white sausages and Susländer pork knuckle; vegetarian and vegan dishes are also available.
