The old and the new
The Überseestadt is home to a wide range of companies from the most diverse sectors. There are currently (as of 12/2018) about 1,190 companies with around 18,900 employees.
The Überseestadt in Bremen has a vibrant port atmosphere – and it should stay that way. Many businesses new to the area have joined the long list of companies – mainly from the port, logistics, manufacturing, food and luxury food industries – that have been located there for many generations. The Rolandmühle flour mill, for example, has been located at Bremen’s timber and factory port for around 100 years. The silo belonging to Europe’s only mill with a seaport link can be seen from far away and has long symbolised the port.
Another example is Rickmers Reismühle, a traditional rice milling company that goes back to the famous ship owner, Rickmer Clasen Rickmers. The company has been in Bremen for over 100 years, located right by the water and at the centre of today’s Überseestadt.
Port and logistics firms joined forces in 2003 to form the ISH – Initiative Stadtbremische Häfen e.V., an initiative designed to promote Bremen’s ports. Some of the companies involved are the Rolandmühle, the Hansakai handling facility, KAEFER insulation technology, Uwe Kloska, Steinbrügge & Berninghausen, Rickmers Reismühle and the Bremer Weinkontor wine merchants.
The charm and unique nature of the Überseestadt is created by the mixture of traditional companies and recently established businesses from the media and creative industries, as well as various service providers, retailers, restaurants, start-ups and offices. This diversity makes it clear that the Überseestadt is a “world of possibilities” that hasn’t forgotten its origins and history as a seaport.
