The taste of the Überseestadt…

The range of food available in Bremen’s Überseestadt is extremely diverse, with everything from German curried sausage to Syrian gourmet cuisine.

As such a tasty selection can be quite disorientating, making it impossible to see the wood for the trees, we’ve taken the trouble to put together a list of (hopefully!) all the restaurants, food trucks, cafés and bistros found in Bremen’s youngest quarter.

Have we missed a gastronomic hotspot? Oh dear… Sorry about that! It seems we couldn’t quite concentrate properly when we were putting the list together – probably because of our rumbling tummies and watering mouths. Italian / Mediterranean

Riva
Great food made with a ray of sunshine and the carefree nature of the Mediterranean – that’s what the Riva Restaurant claims to bring to the banks of the River Weser. The menu has a range of Italian and south-French delicacies, Mediterranean seafood and freshly-made pizza. The lunchtime menu changes every week, and brunch is served on Sundays. www.riva-restaurant.de

Elisa
Guests at Elisa can look forward to a culinary journey through Italy, Greece and Turkey. The restaurant opened its doors in 2015 and has enriched the selection of restaurants in the Überseestadt. www.elisa-bremen.de

VAIVAI
Rural Italian cuisine is served with an urban industrial design at VAIVAI in the Weser quarter. Fresh, simple and charismatic food can be enjoyed at lunch or on warm summer evenings with a view of the Weser.www.vaivai.de/bremen

Port in the “Speicher XI” warehouse
The Port Restaurant in the “Speicher XI” warehouse serves a wide range of food with both a Mediterranean touch and north-German influences. For example, the menu has both home-made porcini ravioli and potato soup with North Sea shrimp. The Port Restaurant has both a lunchtime and brunch menu. www.port-speicherxi.de 

Feuerwache
The Feuerwache Restaurant offers Mediterranean serenity by a north-German harbour basin. Italian delicacies are served for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch in a restaurant surrounded by historical buildings with views of the timber and factory port.  www.restaurant-feuerwache.de

CHILLI CLUB
The CHILLI CLUB is a restaurant, bar and lounge near the Weser Tower. Modern Asian cuisine is served from midday to night in an urban atmosphere – from sushi to satay.  www.chilliclub.de

Phở Việt
The name is quite a mouthful itself, and the first impression might not convince you… But if you’re daring enough to enter the cobbled-together hut on “Auf der Muggenburg”, you’ll discover Vietnamese cuisine in the heart of the Überseestadt. Jaya
“Authentic Asian cuisine” is served at Jaya. Located along the Europahafen promenade, Jaya is the perfect option for curry fans with its tasty Asian street food. www.jaya-food.de

TASTE by Mr. Subry
Variety is the key ingredient here! But we’re always up for a curry. Since autumn 2016, Mr. Subry (from the Jaya Restaurant) has also been conjuring up lunchtime delicacies at the TASTE restaurant. His creations are anything but boring. www.taste-bremen.de

Blaufeuer
The Blaufeuer Restaurant is open all day in the Steigenberger Hotel Bremen, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Head chef Thomas Seeländer has devoted himself to preparing culinary delights from the rivers, seas and oceans, combining modern cuisine with north-German traditions.www.steigenberger.com

El Mundo
Big, bigger, El Mundo! Guests can dine beneath enormous chandeliers at the impressive El Mundo Restaurant in Schuppen 1. The menu includes fish and meat dishes, rollos and salads. www.elmundo-bremen.de

Leander

Hafencasino
The Hafencasino is an institution and almost a relic from the past – but it’s still en vogue! Rita and Heiner’s restaurant is located right by the timber and factory port, serving hearty, home-made treats like “Strammer Max” egg and ham sandwiches, prawn sandwiches, rissoles, white herring and fried potatoes… http://bit.ly/1U9snZt

Anbiethalle
Bremen’s dockworkers used to call their lunch break “Anbiet”, which they would often spend in the “Anbiethalle” eating schnitzel with hearty fried potatoes. Fish is still served on Fridays, but it’s moved from its old location: If you’re looking for some hearty food, as of late July 2016, you’ll find the Anbiethalle at the old roadmaster’s office (“Alte Bahnmeisterei”) in Speicherhof 4.

Currykitchen
A classic kitchen serving classic food: The team at Currykitchen serves gourmet curried sausage and Belgian-style fries in a converted American Airstream trailer. You can find the silver “Currywurst Caravan” on weekdays from 11:00 to 15:00 at Konsul-Smidt-Straße 11 (next to the blue hall). www.currykitchen-bremen.de

Biten Mobil
Butter.Bread.Bio. This organic food truck serves pasta, sandwiches, hearty soups, coffee and cake, salads and various drinks. Biten Mobil is open every day from 8:30 to 15:30 and is located right by the Europahafen. www.biten.de

Ricarda VeganRicarda Vegan alternates with Biten Mobil at the far end of the Europahafen (Ludwig-Franzius-Platz), serving – you guessed it – vegan food. You can buy everything from vegan kebabs to vegan burgers with sweet potato fries. Ricarda Vegan

Oriental

AL-DAR
“Salam Aleikum” to 600 m2 of Arabian nights! Syrian specialities are served in the Oriental atmosphere of the AL-DAR Restaurant. Vegetarians and vegans can also find a huge variety of dishes, including various “mezzeh” – hot and cold Syrian starters – and hot main courses with interesting names like “lachme meschwi” and “sambusik”. www.aldar.de

Hafenbrise
The Hafenbrise Café in Schuppen 1 serves breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake on weekdays from 8:00, on Saturdays from 12:00 and on Sundays from 10:00. Sunday brunch is also available. www.hafenbrise.de

Sichtbar
Set in a high-rise building and open early, sandwiches and delicious breakfasts are served from 7:30 in the Sichtbar on the ground floor of the Weser Tower. There are different lunchtime meals, salads and desserts every day. www.bistro-sichtbar.de

Lloyd Caffee / Rösterei-Café
Coffee is served at the heart of the coffee quarter. The beans taste even better in a rugged atmosphere among the sacks of coffee and a roasting machine. You can relax and watch daily business unfold at the Lloyd Caffee with a piece of cake or another sweet treat. www.lloyd-caffee.de

Kaffee Quartier Kantine
Lunch at the canteen? How imaginative… well, it actually is! The canteen in Bremen’s Coffee Quarter is open to the public, 30% of its ingredients are organic, and it has a (really) fresh salad bar, traditional dishes and innovative recipes. Backshop Port 6
Everything is served fresh out the oven here: bread, bread rolls, lye rolls, croissants… And you can also satiate your lunchtime hunger with pizza, salads and savoury treats.

Hafenrummel
This isn’t just a place for gambling, playing games and testing your skills; the bistro at the port funfair also serves “Rummelrollen” savoury rolls and crêpes! www.hafenrummel.de 

Schwarzlichthof

Spanhacke´s Bäckerei & Konditorei
Here you can buy a wide range of sweet and savoury cakes, pastries, bread and sandwiches, and everything is served fresh out the oven. (Konsul-Smidt-Str. 86)

Müller & Egerer
The bakery store with a cozy café serves homemade soups and casseroles on weekdays in addition to the crisp baked goods. On Saturdays and Sundays, a wonderful selection of cakes and pies for the coffee table or freshly baked for the bread basket makes the choice to agony. From the spring of 2018 comes to the 76 seats in the café, a well-kept outdoor area. www.mueller-egerer.de

Zollhaus Bistro
